A Cry in the Night

Greta leaped from rooftop to rooftop, listening with unerring precision for any sound that deviated from the ordinary. So far, there was nothing.

She immersed herself in the strengthening embrace of the night; the veil that concealed her from her past and those who sought to oppress her.

Rescuing victims from this killer during the pandemic was a task no typical human could undertake. She considered the possibility there might be a force in the universe that had put her in Farley at this particular time. But if that was the case, why hadn’t it got her there before four innocent lives had been taken?

Swooping across rooftops gave her a sense of liberation. The breeze licked her face, invigorating her as she soared through the air with a series of tireless body flips.

Her patrol endured for hours until she arrived on the outskirts of the neighboring village, Carlsfield. Nothing had happened so far, but she was restless. She had to find the killer, no matter what.

Then, the sound of a faint cry alerted her. Several rooftops later, it sounded closer. Keep screaming. Tell me where you are.

She leaped across two more rooftops in the direction of the incessant screams. Not being able to pinpoint it quickly became a maddening experience. She was so close to saving an innocent, but the cry’s echo distorted her sense of direction. Driven by raw determination, she ran across the flat roof of a convenience store and scanned the vicinity. “Where are you?”

She finally caught sight of movement through her night vision goggles, approximately five-hundred-yards in the distance. From where she stood, it looked like a small park, set just before a cluster of trees. There were no other buildings between the roof and the park. She would have to jump more than twenty feet to the ground and sprint to the target.

As she prepared to make the leap, she saw an elderly man walking his Cairn terrier, directly beneath her. It was vital that she be seen by as few witnesses as possible. The old man shuffled beneath her at a snail’s pace, exacerbating her gnawing frustration. Come on, move, dammit.

Finally, he reached the edge of the store and turned down a side street.

She took a few steps back, ran to the edge, and executed a mid-air double-flip to mediate her landing. A forward roll softened the impact when she hit the road.

Without missing a beat, she sprinted with everything she had. She could only hope her 23 m.p.h. peak speed would enable her to reach the victim in time.

By the time she’d covered four-hundred-yards, she could clearly see a young, brunette woman, naked from the waist down. Her torn t-shirt and jacket indicated she’d been accosted.

A few yards farther ahead, someone ran into the trees, which threw her into a dilemma. She could attend to the victim, or she could pursue the target. There was no third option.

The girl wept hysterically, compelling her to stop. She knelt before her, estimating she was around eighteen.
